NATIONAL POLLING

No new (legitimate) national polls today.  There was, however, one of the more amusing "polls" published yesterday that has been making the social media rounds, with (thankfully) the vast majority of people either rolling their eyes or chuckling outright.

A group calling themselves the "
Arizona Freedom Alliance" has claimed to have conducted a poll of 50,000 voters from across the entire country and said their results showed Trump leading Clinton 67% to 19%, with 13% undecided. Needless to say, not one serious political observer has given this group any credence whatsoever.

Back here in the real world of actual stats and legitimate polling firms, the current composite polling average in a four-candidate field has Clinton leading Trump by 6.5%.

Inside the Failing Mission to Tame Trump’s Tongue

(New York Times) -- Donald J. Trump was in a state of shock: He had just fired his campaign manager and was watching the man discuss his dismissal at length on CNN. The rattled candidate’s advisers and family seized the moment for an intervention.

Joined by his daughter Ivanka and her husband, Jared Kushner, a cluster of Mr. Trump’s confidants pleaded with him to make that day — June 20 — a turning point.

He would have to stick to a teleprompter and end his freestyle digressions and insults, like his repeated attacks on a Hispanic federal judge. Paul Manafort, Mr. Trump’s campaign chairman, and Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey argued that Mr. Trump had an effective message, if only he would deliver it. For now, the campaign’s polling showed, too many voters described him in two words: “unqualified” and “racist.”

Trump Solicits Election Observers After Warning of Vote Rigging

(USA Today) -- After warning supporters of possible election fraud in Pennsylvania, Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump invited supporters on his official website to volunteer as election observers to "Help Me Stop Crooked Hillary From Rigging This Election!"

The new page on his website provides supporters with a form to fill out to "volunteer to be a Trump Election Observer."

Speaking at a Friday evening rally in Altoona, Pa., Trump again raised the issue of possible voter fraud in the November elections, saying, "we're going to watch Pennsylvania."

"Go down to certain areas and watch and study make sure other people don't come in and vote five times," he urged his audience.

Trump Spokeswoman: Afghanistan Was 'Obama’s war'

(CNN) -- Donald Trump campaign spokeswoman Katrina Pierson said on Saturday the US' military effort in Afghanistan "was Obama's war."

The war in Afghanistan began in 2001, following the attacks of September 11, more than seven years before Barack Obama became president. The Afghanistan fight, initiated during the presidency of George W. Bush, stands as the longest running war in the history of the country.

Pierson's comment came during an exchange with CNN's Victor Blackwell, when she was asked to explain the Republican nominee's recent assertion that President Obama is the "founder of ISIS." Trump has since called the comment sarcastic, "but not that sarcastic."

Pierson blamed the rise of ISIS on Obama and Hillary Clinton's opposition to the surge in Iraq, when she was a senator from New York.

Hacker Posts Personal Info of House Democrats

(Washington Post) -- After receiving a deluge of obscene voicemails and text messages, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi informed her fellow Democrats on Saturday of “an electronic Watergate break-in” and warned them not to allow family members to answer their phones or read incoming texts.

The breach targeted the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and other Democratic Party entities, Pelosi said in a statement. As a result, a mix of personal and official information of Democratic members and hundreds of congressional staff, purportedly from a hack of the DCCC, was posted online, she said. Pelosi said she is changing her phone number and advised her colleagues to do the same.

A hacker who calls himself Guccifer 2.0 took credit for posting the information Friday night. He had claimed responsibility for the recent hack of Democratic National Committee emails, which roiled the Democratic National Convention last month. While Guccifer 2.0 has described himself as a Romanian hacker and denies working for Russia, online investigators assert that he is linked to Russia.
