Will Unconventional GOP Convention Work For Trump?
(Christian Science Monitor) -- This year the Republican National Convention is going to be unconventional. That’s what presumptive nominee Donald Trump is promising, anyway. The schedule is still in flux, but for the most part boring speeches by politicians will be kept to a minimum. They’ll be replaced by exciting appearances by sports stars and other celebrities, according to Mr. Trump.
Trump himself rejected proposals that he speak all three nights, Trump tells The New York Times. But never fear, there are lots of other Trumps to go around. Trump’s children will speak, and perhaps Trump’s wife, Melania, will as well. “She’s actually writing some things up right now,” Trump told the New York Times.
Sanders Won't Release Secret Service Detail
(CNN) -- Bernie Sanders is back to his old day job, trading the booming applause of his campaign rallies to the far more tedious work of the Senate. But just off the Senate floor and across the Capitol, one vestige of his presidential campaign remains: his Secret Service detail. And taxpayers are footing the bill.
Protecting a presidential candidate costs about $40,000 a day, a federal official familiar with the Homeland Security budget told CNN. For Sanders, that's more than a half-million dollars since the last primary on June 14. The cost could grow by nearly $2 million if he stays in the race through the Democratic convention in Philadelphia later.
VP Vetting? Trump Meets With Sen. Joni Ernst
(Fox News) -- Donald Trump on Monday spent part of his July 4th with Sen. Joni Ernst -- fueling speculation that the Iowa freshman senator could be on the short list of his vice presidential picks.
Ernst told Fox News they had a "good conversation," adding, "I will continue to share my insights with Donald about the need to strengthen our economy, keep our nation safe, and ensure America is always a strong, stabilizing force around the globe."
Cory Booker Admits To Being Vetted As Possible VP Pick
(Washington Post) -- Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., on Sunday reopened the door to speculation that he could be Hillary Clinton’s running mate when he appeared to back off his previous assertion that he is not being vetted by the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee.
“At this point, I’ve answered this question, talked about this,” Booker said on CNN’s “State of the Union.” “I’m just referring questions about the vice presidency to the woman that’s going to have to make this decision. You should talk to the Hillary Clinton campaign. What I do know is that on the Democratic side, there are many fabulous candidates - people that could be really strong vice presidential candidates.”
