Ted Cruz Humiliates Donald Trump, Refuses to Endorse Him at RNC

(Daily Beast) -- Ted Cruz hijacked Donald Trump’s party Wednesday night.

In the most dramatic, off-script moment in a Republican Convention that’s been full of them, the second-place finisher in the party’s contest didn’t endorse the man who bested him—effectively launching his own 2020 presidential bid in the midst of Donald Trump’s effort this year.

He refused to endorse the Republican Party’s nominee, merely congratulating him on winning the nomination and not so much as mentioning Trump’s name thereafter. “We’re fighting,” Cruz told the crowd, “not for one particular candidate or one campaign.”

In November, the Tea Party senator said, “vote your conscience… vote for candidates up and down the ticket who you trust to defend our freedom and to be faithful to the Constitution.”

Pence Seeks to Unify GOP After Cruz Snub

(Politico) -- Mike Pence had the stage to himself Wednesday night. But even with Donald Trump off stage and watching, a different, Texas-sized echo was still ringing.

After largely being overshadowed by Trump during his official debut last weekend, the billionaire businessman’s running mate used the prime-time stage on Wednesday night to bridge the divide between the conservatives who have fallen in line behind Trump and those still holding out. He also tested out his new role as Trump's No. 1 attack dog on Hillary Clinton.

But Pence's prime-time moment came as Republicans were still picking their jaws up from the floor after Texas Sen. Ted Cruz jolted Quicken Loans Arena by telling Republicans to "vote their conscience" in November.

Secret Service Investigating Trump Adviser After Clinton Remark

(CNN) -- The US Secret Service is investigating an informal adviser to Donald Trump's presidential campaign after he called for Hillary Clinton's execution.

Al Baldasaro, a New Hampshire state representative, told radio host Jeff Kuhner Tuesday that Clinton "should be put in the firing line and shot for treason."

"The U.S. Secret Service is aware of this matter and will conduct the appropriate investigation," said Shawn L. Holtzclaw, a spokesman for the Secret Service.

Trump spokeswoman Hope Hicks told CNN the campaign "does not agree with those statements." She declined to characterize Baldasaro's role with the campaign or whether he would continue to travel with Trump on occasion.

Melania Trump Speech Appears To Be An Illegal Campaign Contribution

(Huffington Post) -- The revelation that Donald Trump’s business staff writer Meredith McIver wrote the partly plagiarized speech given by Melania Trump on Monday night raises questions about whether his campaign is illegally commingling corporate and campaign resources.

McIver does not appear to have any official role in the presidential campaign. Her letter acknowledging her role in the speech debacle appeared on corporate letterhead from the Trump Organization. And she is not listed as being paid by the Trump campaign on any available reports filed with the Federal Election Commission.

Corporations are banned from donating directly or through in-kind services to political campaigns. McIver could have volunteered her services, but her offer to resign from the Trump Organization suggests that she was acting within her job responsibilities. (Donald Trump rejected that offer.)
