Trump Wants GOP To Court Black Voters

(CNN) -- Donald Trump acknowledged Saturday that the Republican Party "must do better" in appealing to African-Americans.

But in the same speech here, he again slammed an order by the state's Democratic governor, Terry McAuliffe, to restore voting rights to some convicted felons who have completed their sentences, a move McAuliffe says could help African-Americans who were disproportionally affected by laws that put lifetime bans on felons.

"The GOP is the party of Abraham Lincoln," Trump said. "I want our party to be the home of the African-American voter once again."

He continued: "I've asked the African-American community to honor me with their vote," adding that he "fully recognize(s) the outreach to the African-American community is an area where the Republican Party must do better."

Foundation Ties Bedevil Hillary Clinton’s Presidential Campaign

(New York Times) -- The kingdom of Saudi Arabia donated more than $10 million. Through a foundation, so did the son-in-law of a former Ukrainian president whose government was widely criticized for corruption and the murder of journalists. A Lebanese-Nigerian developer with vast business interests contributed as much as $5 million.

For years the Bill, Hillary and Chelsea Clinton Foundation thrived largely on the generosity of foreign donors and individuals who gave hundreds of millions of dollars to the global charity. But now, as Mrs. Clinton seeks the White House, the funding of the sprawling philanthropy has become an Achilles’ heel for her campaign and, if she is victorious, potentially her administration as well.

With Mrs. Clinton facing accusations of favoritism toward Clinton Foundation donors during her time as secretary of state, former President Bill Clinton told foundation employees on Thursday that the organization would no longer accept foreign or corporate donations should Mrs. Clinton win in November.

Republicans Prep ‘Break Glass’ Emergency Plan As Trump Tumbles

(Politico) -- Republicans, worried about preserving their House and Senate majorities in the face of fierce headwinds, are accelerating their plans to distance themselves from Donald Trump – and may soon concede, if only implicitly, his defeat.

Party strategists are mapping out blueprints for down-ballot candidates, in TV ads and on the campaign trail, to present themselves as checks on a Hillary Clinton presidency. It’s an approach that would essentially admit a Trump loss. In interviews, nearly one dozen Republican operatives said they had begun poll-testing the idea – which one labeled a “break glass in case of emergency” strategy - to gauge how the public would react to it.

It would represent a remarkable step – one not seen since 1996, when down-ballot Republicans, resigned to Bob Dole’s loss, campaigned as backstops to Bill Clinton’s second term. It comes at a time of mounting unease among Republicans about Trump’s prospects and how it will impact the fortunes of others. In recent days, a debate has begun to simmer among the party’s operatives about whether it will soon be time for the Republican National Committee to cut Trump off and redirect resources to congressional lawmakers.

Sanders Returning To Campaign Trail For Clinton

(The Hill) -- Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) will be returning to the campaign trail next month to stump for Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton. "I look forward to it," Sanders told The Washington Post Friday. "I feel very strongly that Donald Trump would be a disaster for the country. I want to do everything I can to see that Secretary Clinton wins."

Sanders spent a year on the trail for his own presidential campaign, before dropping out and endorsing Clinton last month. He spoke on her behalf at the Democratic National Convention, but faced backlash from some of his supporters who say Clinton benefited from a rigged primary process.

Sanders has pleaded with his supporters to back Clinton. Now he's expected to hit the campaign trail to target the working-class and younger voters. He plans to visit New Hampshire, Maine, Michigan and Wisconsin — all states where he won primaries and caucuses — as well as others were he had strong support such as Ohio, Pennsylvania and Nevada.
