83 Days Till Election Day: New polls from New York, Washington

STATE POLLING

New polls today from New York (Clinton +25) and Washington (Clinton 19).

Neither of these results are unexpected -- Clinton has been leading strongly in both states since this site started -- but the size of her lead in New York has raised a number of eyebrows in both parties. Apparently, many New Yorkers remember her time representing them in the U.S. Senate fondly.

Currently, Clinton has a 267 to 139 "safe" electoral lead over Trump with a projected overall lead of 346 to 192. Here are the current averages from the battleground states:

Leaning Republican

Utah: Trump up by 5.5%
South Carolina: Trump up by 4.3%
Missouri: Trump up by 4.1%
Arizona: Trump up by 1.8%
Georgia: Trump up by 1.5%
Maine (CD2): Trump up by 1%

Leaning Democrat

Nevada: Clinton up by 1%
Iowa: Clinton up by 1.3%
Ohio: Clinton up by 2.5%
Florida: Clinton up by 3%
North Carolina: Clinton up by 3.7%
New Mexico: Clinton up by 5%

NATIONAL POLLING

New poll today from Breitbart/Gravis that has Clinton up 5 -- 42% for her to 37% for Trump. For the two main independent candidates, Johnson has 9% and Stein is a distant fourth with 3%.

What makes this interesting is that Breitbart is well known for being a leading conservative news site, but while other sites might automatically dismiss them for an assumed "house effect", they have partnered with Gravis, which is a well-known and respected polling company.

The current composite polling average in a four-candidate field has Clinton leading Trump by 6.4%.

Trump Calls For ‘Extreme Vetting’ of Immigrants

(Washington Post) -- Donald Trump is calling for "extreme vetting" of people looking to immigrate to or visit the United States, including an ideological screening test to weed out those who don't "share our values and respect our people."

A subdued Trump, delivering what his campaign billed as a major speech on terrorism in Youngstown, Ohio, said immigration would need to be stopped from "some of the most dangerous and volatile regions of the world that have a history of exporting terrorism," but did not specify what they were. Should he be elected president, Trump said he would ask the State Department and Department of Homeland Security to identify those places and stop processing visas for people looking to come to the United States from there.

"Those who do not believe in our Constitution, or who support bigotry and hatred, will not be admitted for immigration into the country," Trump said. "Only those who we expect to flourish in our country — and to embrace a tolerant American society — should be issued immigrant visas."

Manafort Blasts NYT, Denies He Accepted Ukraine Cash Payments

(Politico) -- Donald Trump’s campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, slammed the New York Times Monday morning after the newspaper published a story reporting that secret ledgers in Ukraine show more than $12 million in cash earmarked for him.

The report states that the political party of former Ukraine president and pro-Russia ally Viktor Yanukovych set aside $12.7 million for Manafort. Investigators say the money was part of an illegal, undisclosed payment system, the Times reports.

“Once again, the New York Times has chosen to purposefully ignore facts and professional journalism to fit their political agenda, choosing to attack my character and reputation rather than present an honest report,” Manafort said in a statement obtained by NBC News. “The suggestion that I accepted cash payments is unfounded, silly and nonsensical.”

Trump Camp Apparently Soliciting Foreign Cash Despite Warnings

(The Hill) -- Donald Trump’s campaign appears to be soliciting foreign donations despite multiple warnings and a criminal complaint filed with the Department of Justice.

On Sunday, an Australian member of parliament, Terri Butler, emailed The Hill the latest fundraising solicitation she’d received from the Trump campaign.

The email, received on August 14 just after midnight Australian time, went to Butler’s government email account. It asked her to make a campaign contribution to Trump so she could “join the highest ranks of our campaign as an Executive Member.”

Butler told The Hill she has received several fundraising solicitations from the Trump campaign at her government email account.

What Will It Take For Johnson, Stein To Get On Debate Stage?

(CNN) -- Attention, Gary Johnson and Jill Stein: The Commission on Presidential Debates has revealed exactly how it will determine who gets to be on stage this fall.

In a normal election season, this announcement wouldn't matter much. But this year Johnson, the Libertarian Party nominee, and Jill Stein, the Green Party contender, are both hoping to make the cut.

Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton are the only two definite participants, since they are polling well above the commission's 15% threshold for invitations.

Johnson and Stein are below the threshold and are trying to change that between now and mid-September. That's when the commission's "selection criteria" will be applied.
